Coromandel Road Trip from Thames

Thames is where the Coromandel Peninsula begins, which makes it the perfect place to start a road trip. From here you can trace the pohutukawa-lined coast north to Coromandel Town, or cross the spine of the ranges to the famous ocean beaches of the east coast. Either way the driving is half the pleasure. Here is how to plan a Coromandel road trip from Thames.

The classic drive runs north on State Highway 25 along the Pohutukawa Coast, hugging the Firth of Thames past the beach settlements of Te Puru, Waiomu and Tapu. It is about 55 km, roughly an hour, but you will want longer: the road curls between sea and bush, with pohutukawa leaning over little bays and cafes like the Waiomu Beach Cafe begging you to stop. At the end, Coromandel Town rewards you with galleries, green-lipped mussels and the quirky Driving Creek Railway.

Route two: across to the east-coast beaches

For golden sand and surf, cross the peninsula to the east coast. At Hot Water Beach you can dig your own steaming pool in the sand for a couple of hours either side of low tide, so time it right and bring a spade. Nearby, Cathedral Cove near Hahei hides its cathedral-like rock arch, and the unspoilt New Chums Beach is a short walk from the road. It is a bigger day, so leave early and pack the togs.

Driving tips

  • The peninsula roads are winding and narrow in places; allow more time than the distance suggests.
  • Fuel up in Thames before heading out, especially for east-coast trips.
  • Check the tide times if Hot Water Beach is on your list; the hot pools only work around low tide.
