The Hauraki Rail Trail is one of the easiest riding trails in New Zealand, with various stages allowing for single or multi-day Rail Trail cycle rides. The 82km trail is the easiest Grade 1 cycle trail in New Zealand to ride, showcasing some of the best scenery New Zealand has to offer, from the Pohutukawa trees on the Thames Coast, through lush green Waikato farm lands, to areas rich in pioneering history.
The trail follows the path of two historic railway lines, running from Thames to Paeroa and Waikino to Te Aroha, while a new section is open on the Shorebird Coast , connecting Thames to Pukorokoro-Miranda.
Thames to Matatoki Cheesebarn Return (22km)
With panoramic views of the towering bush-clad Coromandel Ranges, the trail meanders alongside the Waihou River and then through lush, green dairy farm pastures with peacefully grazing cattle.
On this day trip you will be able to stop in at The Cheesebarn in Matatoki (22km return) and see cheese makers at work and enjoy a drink and something to eat at the cafe. For a slightly longer ride, visit The Coach House Tavern at the historic village of Puriri (28km return) where you can enjoy a full menu and refreshments before the return ride to Thames.
Relax and take in the fresh Coromandel air with a multi-day ride on the Hauraki Rail Trail. There are lots of great options to check out to suit all fitness levels and time. The full Hauraki Rail Trail can be comfortably ridden in 3-4 days (or for the fitter, more experienced riders you could complete in 2 days).
There are five legs to the multi-day trail:
- Kaiaua to Miranda
- Thames to Paeroa – 33km
- Paeroa to Waihi – 25km
- Paeroa to Te Aroha – 21km
- Te Aroha to Matamata - 37km
